Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 28 August 2009

Uniform a class issue

• WHAT Emer Brizzolara appears to be suggesting (Pride in uniform, Letters August 14) is that by raising the cost of the uniform it will discourage working class children from choosing Highbury Grove, which is, of course, selection.
Where are local working class children supposed to go to school? Perhaps Emer wants to return to Victorian times when only children who could afford to send kids to school did so or perhaps Emer thinks working class kids should be sent to vocational colleges of some sort so they will not be able to aspire to go to university.
It is further worrying to see a parent demonising children and therefore encouraging other children to do the same, because they may have bought some or all their uniform from Asda or other supermarkets when they simply can’t afford the higher prices of Rough Cuts.
Emer’s letter seems nothing short of class warfare emphasised by the reference to a so-called bad reputation.
If Highbury Grove has a bad reputation it’s because middle class parents have perpetuated such a reputation, not because of working class children. I sincerely hope Emer is wrong about the school’s values because we don’t need back-door selection; we need good local comprehensive schools for all.
