Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 28 August 2009

Devotion to history was tireless

• PROFESSOR Christopher Elrington was tireless in his devotion to history, as a discipline, a way of thinking, rather than a mere subject (Historian walked the counties he surveyed, August 14).

As president of both Islington Archaeology and History Society and Camden Historical Society he was always eager to give time and enthusiasm to individuals and groups ranging from interested newcomers to published professionals.
His own publications from the University of London’s Institute of Historical Research have worldwide respect.
He will be much missed by all who knew him, and his work will be long admired by people who never had the chance to meet him. I am very sorry to have known him for so short a time.
ANDREW GARDNER
Chairman, Islington Archaeology and History Society

Charm and culture

• THE death of Christopher Elrington marks a great loss, not only for Islington but for us all, both as a distinguished historian and as a man of great charm and culture.
We shall greatly miss his humour and his abundant interest in conversation, and our warm sympathy goes to his wife Jean.
MARY COSH
Albion Mews, N1
