A-level students make mark
Mixed emotions as teenagers learn their results after months of waiting
HUNDREDS of envelopes revealing the fates of Islington’s A-level students were ripped open yesterday (Thursday) to mixed reactions.
Some students emerged screaming and whooping for joy while others quietly pondered their next move.
Rujina Begum, 18, from King’s Cross, is set to study Law at LSE after gaining four As, while Biruk Gonfa is off to City University to study Mechanical Engineering. He said: “Hopefully I’m going to work in airlines.”
Highbury Fields pupil Michelle Badejo, 18, is heading to Kingston University, Surrey, to study business with law, while Highbury Grove school student Yasha Jannoo with three As has been accepted by Oxford to study physics.
Chinese-born He Meng, who has only been in the UK for five years, has been accepted by King’s College London to study maths with grades ABC.
Highbury Grove associate headteacher Henry Jones said: “Many students have overcome incredible odds.”
Karen Abse, director of sixth form at City and Islington College in Goswell Road, said: “We are particularly pleased that 40 per cent of the passes are A or B grades. This is our best result ever.”

Top class! ‘Yes’ for Yasmin
YASMIN Noryaly fled the Taliban in Afghanistan at the age of seven.
The only English she knew at the time was “happy birthday” and “yes”. Within a year she had been taught to speak English at Winton Primary School. Yesterday, the City and Islington College student learned she had gained three As and has won a place at Queen Mary University. She said: “I love this country. I didn’t expect these grades.” |
