All play and no work makes for a fun day

HIGHBURY Fields was filled with the sound of children on Wednesday as more than 1,000 families enjoyed themselves at Islington’s free Play Day. Youngsters had the chance to take part in traditional games, have their faces painted and pet farmyard animals at the event.
Islington’s playrangers helped with the fun by staging a tug of war alongside other games, sports, arts and crafts.
Islington Council’s children’s chief Councillor Paula Belford joined in the fun. She said: “Islington Play Day was a fantastic opportunity for families to get out and about during the summer holidays, spending time together in the outdoors. There was so much for children to choose from and the families I saw were clearly having a great time, trying out all the free activities. Islington Council is spending over £1million on developing play spaces across the borough over three years.”
London Play set up a natural play area, including a sand pit, climbing frame created from a tree trunk and a slide made of wood, while a “cardboard city” was built by a another group of children. Child-minder Ann Conroy, who brought three children, said: “The kids are having a great time. They were really excited about having their faces painted and they’ve made their own necklaces too. Outside play like this is fantastic and they love being outdoors getting plenty of exercise.”
The event was organised by Islington Council with Islington Play Association for National Play Day.
