Six years for man caught with gun
A MAN found with a loaded and cocked pistol was jailed for six years on Friday.
Mehmet Senpalit, 22, who hid a 9mm handgun in a bag, was approached by police in Holloway because he was acting suspiciously, Blackfriars Crown Court was told. Senpalit, from Enfield, admitted possession of a gun and ammunition.
Defence lawyer Adam Wiseman accepted that when his client was arrested he had told police: “They were going to kill me.” But he had since denied having the gun for himself, instead arguing he was transferring it for someone else.
Senpalit was stopped in Hornsey Road in June by a police team after they saw him coming out of a building and climbing into a minicab, prosecution counsel Philip Jones told the court.
He said: “Police became suspicious because of his demeanour. He got into a minicab but before the driver could drive away they asked him to get out. He resisted, they struggled with him and arrested him.”
A series of previous convictions were hinted at by Mr Jones – although not revealed – starting in November 2006 and leading up to an appearance for aggravated vehicle-taking at Snaresbrook Crown Court last month.
Mr Wiseman said that Senpalit had no history of violence or involvement with weapons. He was given a four-year term for possession of eight live rounds of ammunition, to serve concurrently with his six-year sentence.
Judge Aidan Marron, QC, sentencing, told Senpalit: “You have pleaded guilty to two very serious offences. You were caught with a loaded firearm in a public place. When police sought to arrest you there was a violent struggle.
“When the gun was produced your counsel was ‘they were going to kill me’. It strikes me this is a particularly serious matter. You were caught red-handed.” |
