Street’s ahead: Bloom award bid

A STREET where residents created their own floral displays around pavement trees is in the running for a nationwide gardening award.
Judges from Britain in Bloom visited Ockendon Road, in Canonbury, on Monday to see the colourful show created by a dozen volunteers, who paid for the flowers out of their own pockets.
Shrubs and flowers were planted in small beds around 34 street trees in an attractive display which has already won awards and praise from Islington Council.
Tony Campbell, a member of environmental volunteer group Islington Eyes, helped organise the displays with his wife Tessa.
The retired British Library worker said: “It’s a way of brightening up the street. Of course, there are always dogs and vandals to worry about but we can usually repair any damage.
“The displays have to be watered regularly – about every other day in the summer. It’s a bit of work for volunteers but we think it is worth it.”
Deputy Lib Dem council leader Councillor Lucy Watt said: “Residents have done extremely well just to enter the competition Britain in Bloom. Whether they win or not, they should be congratulated.”
The Ockendon Road displays have inspired residents in other streets to create similar schemes. Grants to pay for plants may be available from the council’s south area planning committee.

Lovely to see people taking care of their area like this. Nice change to see positive action rather than people just complaining!
