Bridget Fox: ‘unfair for small businesses’
Store wars: Lorry parking protest

A SUPERMARKET was at the centre of a “them and us” row this week after complaints that delivery lorries are parking in a bus lane at Islington Green.
Shopkeepers claimed that either traffic wardens were turning a blind eye to the lorries or Tesco was prepared to write off three figure fines as a business expense. “Either way it is pretty unfair for small businesses struggling to cope with parking restrictions,” said Bridget Fox, Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Islington South and Finsbury, this week. “If anyone else parked in a bus lane their feet wouldn’t touch the ground.”
The Tesco Metro store has no delivery entrance and the bus lane is only a few yards from the entrance to the store.
Ms Fox added: “The lorries are parked in a particularly crowded part of Essex Road, where there are two ‘bendy’ bus routes and where it narrows for the junction with Islington Green and Upper Street.”
She is hoping to meet Tesco representatives to discuss the issue along with members of the British Freight Association. Ms Fox also complained that Tesco leaves delivery cages on the pavement, potentially obstructing pedestrians.
She believes there are many things big stores can do to avoid problems for the community.
Ms Fox added: “They could stick to agreed delivery ‘windows’ co-ordinated with other stores and share deliveries where possible.”
Meanwhile, London Mayor Boris Johnson is being asked to look at developing a small “London lorry”, as proposed by the London Forum of Civic and Amenity Societies. This would allow goods to be delivered to high streets around the capital on smaller and more environmentally-friendly vehicles.
