Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 14 August 2009

Pipework disaster fear

• I AM concerned at the actions of Homes for Islington (HfI) with reference to the new gas fittings on the Bemerton estate. The pipes come out of the public footpath and onto the exterior walls of the blocks of flats. All this pipework is unprotected and is accessible to cars and vandals.
If one of the main upright feeder pipes is hit by a car there could be a major disaster, similar to the case in Camberwell where there was a loss of six lives. It has been suggested in the media that Camberwell Council could face corporate manslaughter charges over alleged negligence. Although HfI’s method of pipe-fitting would have been agreed by the leader of the council, Councillor Terry Stacy, and Councillor Barbara Smith, executive member for housing, I still have my concerns. I therefore ask MP Emily Thornberry to look into this matter and to reassure local people.
