Bus drivers fight ‘race to bottom’

DRIVERS at Holloway bus garage walked out on strike on Wednesday in a row over pay demonstrating in Marble Arch with a cheeky message for their employers.
Members of the Unite union joined a London-wide protest calling for bus companies to agree to a fixed pay scheme. They lowered their trousers to reveal a message painted on their behinds saying “stop the race to the bottom”.
Holloway bus garage shop steward Paul Brandon said bus operators were increasingly cutting drivers’ pay to help them win contracts.
Mr Brandon said security guards at the protest were “highly provocative” after trouble flared.
He added: “Our member objected to a security guard taking his picture by covering the lens with his hand and then the security guard pushed them.”
