Police child abuse team probe baby’s death
A 25-STRONG team is investigating the death of a four-month-old Barnsbury baby.
Detective Inspector Paul Maddocks, of the Met Police’s child abuse investigation team based in Stratford, said he was treating the death of the baby as “suspicious”. The baby died on July 25 at Great Ormond Street Hospital in Bloomsbury.
A St Pancras inquest heard yesterday (Thursday) that a cause of death could not be ascertained by pathologists following a post-mortem on Monday at the Royal London Hospital in east London. Further tests are due to be carried out.
Det Insp Maddocks, the only witness at the hearing apart from coroner’s officer Paul Hardie, said outside: “I’m treating it as a suspicious death. The baby had injuries but further analysis [is underway]. You do tests on various body parts to determine causation.”
It is understood the baby’s parents – aged 17 and 19 – are due to be re-interviewed by police on Tuesday at a central London police station. Last month they were arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and bailed.
The inquest was adjourned until October 22. |
