Care home watchdogs
• WHEN a salt-of-the-earth constituent and council tenant of more than 20 years walks into the Islington Conservative office and asks: “When are we going to get rid of this lot?” you know the mood of the country is changing towards us.
This tenant has had defective 20-year-old windows for 18 months, but on three occasions repair men – working for Homes for Islington (HfI) – said that the parts are obsolete. I emailed the head of complaints and the head of repairs for the relevant section at HfI on July 17, but to date I have not had a reply.
One former council tenant, who is now a leaseholder, thanks to “the right to buy”, will be charged £43,000 for tarmacing a drive on his estate. I have done a site visit and there are a few bald patches, nothing more. Or, there is the case of the tenants who had the front of their council house painted for the first time in 20 years, only to need the decorators back after three months. Or the two-bedroom leaseholder, in a block of 16, who is being charged £20,000 for primarily a new roof, when a freeholder in my street is being charged £3,000 on the open market for a new roof.
