Sickert Centre unveiled
MAYOR of Islington councillor Anna Berent, has formally re-opened the Walter Sickert community centre in Canonbury Crescent following a major refurbishment.
Neighbours celebrated with a fun day, while Cllr Berent formally cut the ribbon at the centre on Friday.
The new centre has been re-wired and boasts refurbished toilets, a new disabled toilet and a shiny kitchen. The main hall has also been given a facelift.
Homes for Islington, with support from the east area community budget, splashed out £90,000 on the make-over. Work was carried out by Kier Islington, who offered their services at cost price.
The centre also now includes an office for Connect – a service that helps people find work, training and childcare.
As well as being used by a church group, karate club and an Arabic group, there are plans for new events including dance sessions.
Cllr Berent said: “The Walter Sickert centre has been at the heart of the community for many years. It had been in need of refurbishment and modernisation so it’s wonderful to see the investment that has gone in, which will help it to remain a vital local resource and provide facilities for the local community for years to come.”
