Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 31 July 2009

Save our canal café

• ISLINGTON Conservatives feel very strongly that the Sandwich Barge is a great addition to our local amenities and deserves a better deal from British Waterways.
Lorraine Fox’s café provides a welcome service to cyclists and pedestrians and makes the City Road Basin a more attractive destination.
That is good news for residents and points the way to the further regeneration that parts of the surrounding area urgently need.
Lorraine is an Islington resident of long standing who has invested time and money in starting up the business, complying with environmental and refuse regulations.
British Waterways has allowed her to trade and encouraged her. Yet now that she has shown the café idea can work, it is threatening a tender process which could put her out of business.
To help her, please sign the petition which can be reached via www.islington
conservatives.com.
British Waterways manages the canals on behalf of the public. Along with the council and its agents, it should behave reasonably and supportively towards fledgling businesses, particularly during a recession. Anything else is unacceptable behaviour by a public body.
Antonia Cox
Parliamentary spokesman, Islington Conservatives

I AM writing to express my strong support for Lorraine Fox, who I am helping set up a Sandwich Barge on Regent’s Canal.
As a business adviser with Working Links, I provide business support to Hackney residents concentrating on Welfare to Work clients. I help them to set up their own business or become self-employed
Miss Fox has been trying to start her business for some time. She is addressing a variety of infrastructure needs, is environmentally sound and promotes “well-being lifestyle”.
Her well-planned operation additionally will enable her to be economically self-sufficient and provide an opportunity to promote new activities in the area, addressing cooperation between the council, local organisations/businesses and the community.
