Parents alerted after bid to abduct nine-year-old pupil
PARENTS at Canonbury School were warned to be extra vigilant after a man attempted to abduct a nine-year-old girl near the primary.
The man is believed to have driven up to the girl in Canonbury Road at 8.30am last Monday and ordered her to get into his black Volkswagen car. The child refused and ran off. She was not hurt.
Headteacher Sue Seifert sent a letter to parents, warning: “This incident happened in the vicinity of the school. Clearly, the police are doing all within their power to trace the man in question, and to take the appropriate action.”
She warned parents and carers of the need for extra vigilance at this time, adding: “The school is reminding children not to approach strangers, to be wary of them, to keep clear of cars and to report any ‘unusual’ incidents to parents/school as soon as possible after the event.
“Ensuring the safety of children is our highest priority. We would be grateful, therefore, if you could reinforce our message with your child at home.”
An Islington police community support officer gave a stranger awareness assembly to pupils last week.
An Islington police spokesman said he was not aware of any specific threat to children in Islington schools. It was being treated as an isolated incident.
He added: “A black car was seen to drive off following the incident.”
A Town Hall spokesman added that this was the first attempted abduction in the vicinity of the school.
