Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 10 July 2009

The future is green

• IF readers have not yet heard of environment group Transition Highbury they will soon. We are a community-based initiative with exciting plans to work with Highbury residents, groups and businesses to envisage and implement a low-carbon future.
Your next opportunity to meet up with us, find out what we are doing and even get involved is an open lunch picnic on the upper part of Highbury Fields, which is scheduled to start at 12.30pm on Saturday, July 18. Bring food and drink, and something to sit on.
Our aim is to bring people together and create a more sustainable neighbourhood in the face of climate change. Fossil fuel reserves of oil and gas are dwindling to the point where we have globally extracted more than is left in the ground.
Transition Highbury is part of the global Transition Towns movement (independent of government and politics). It is the fastest growing social movement in the world today. Formed in November 2008, we have been going from strength to strength in recent months.
We held an open day in May which brought together more than 60 residents at Islington’s Ecology Centre. Even MP Jeremy Corbyn managed a quick visit.
Many interesting ideas were generated throughout the day. They included how to reduce traffic congestion in the area, the involvement of schools in Transition and a community food-growing project.
Transitioners are now liaising with the council and local groups to identify a suitable plot of land in Highbury on which to experiment with growing food.
Next plans include a big skills swap and teach-in day in September, an activity and discussion day in October and a symposium (thinking day) called Be The Change in November, as well as street-by-street insulation plans for Victorian terraces.
