Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 10 July 2009

‘War Zone’ claim ignores good work that’s going on

• WE were dismayed to find a large part of King’s Cross branded “The War Zone” in an article in the Independent on Sunday recently.
To call this area “notorious” is unfair to those who live there. Like many other inner-city neighbourhoods, King’s Cross has its share of difficulties but it is not “fighting for its life”.
The story also suggests the area and its young people have been all but abandoned to their fate, totally ignoring the huge amount of good work done by groups who are not mentioned.
For example, hundreds of young people pass each year through the doors of the Copenhagen Youth Project in King’s Cross, which offers everything from football to music and mentoring.
The popular Spark Plug Project, just off Caledonian Road, teaches motor cycle mechanics, runs a youth club five nights a week and motorcycle riding trips at weekends.
Since 1927, the Times Amateur Boxing Club in King’s Cross has given countless young people somewhere to go, whether to spar or play football, instead of hanging around on the streets.
All these projects play a huge role in giving young people something to do and have changed many lives for the better. Islington Council actively supports the work they do.
A lot of people are working hard to stop young people in King’s Cross from falling through the cracks – it’s not fair for The Independent article to sell them or the young people short.
