Chief Supt Mike Wise
Top cop’s first challenge

A NEW borough commander takes over on Monday, with the huge task of improving public confidence in Islington police.
Chief Superintendent Mike Wise moves from Kensington and Chelsea to replace Bob Carr, who has retired from the force to set up his own solar heating business.
Chief Supt Wise’s first job is to boost public confidence in police. In a recent survey only 29 per cent of those polled expressed confidence in the police, an all-time low. This put the borough at the bottom of the London league table, and 57 per cent behind neighbouring Camden.
He said: “I wish to gain the confidence of all Islington’s communities by listening and responding to their needs, and to build on the outstanding work that has already been achieved by Islington police and our partners to tackle the areas of greatest concern.”
He added: “Crime has fallen in Islington over the last five years. I want to maintain the focus on reducing crime as well as making people feel safer in their local area.”
Chief Supt Wise joined the Met in 1983 and has worked in Westminster, Ealing and Hillingdon. He has been part of the Notting Hill Carnival police team and has just been appointed to the 2012 Olympics command team.
The father-of-two spends his spare time sailing. He has a yachtmaster qualification and is a director of the Met’s Sailing Club.
