Pentonville’s got artistic talent

ART by Pentonville prisoners is on public display for the first time.
The paintings, sculpture, drawings and pottery on show have been created by inmates since an activity centre opened at the Caledonian Road prison in April last year.
Fifteen artists have produced more than 100 works for the Freedom of Art exhibition at St Pancras Hospital, ranging from the figurative to the abstract, the traditional to the contemporary.
Much of the work is related to prison life, while other pieces imagine scenes from African villages and fantastical lands.
Prison day care centre manager Lisa Cohen said: “A few of the groups of prisoners we get have been doing art for a number of years but they’ve got distracted. They’ve ended up in prison and haven’t used their skills for a while.
“Quite a lot of people that come to the centre have complex needs and mental health issues.
“This helps them cope with prison life and gives them an outlet.
“For instance, people with anger issues are often helped by the pottery. It helps them to alleviate negative emotions.”
Prices start at £5 and go up to £350 for larger works, with all proceeds going to the centre.
Freedom of Art is at The Conference Centre, St Pancras Hospital, in St Pancras Way, King’s Cross, until August 20.
