£400,000 payout to Tube suicide bid patient
THE High Court has ordered Islington mental health bosses to pay £400,000 to a patient they failed to save from himself.
Mental patient Noel Davison attempted to kill himself by jumping in front of a train at Highgate Tube station while under the supervision of Camden and Islington Foundation Trust.
Mr Davison, 48, who lives in Caledonian Road, Islington, survived with a serious head wound and pelvic fractures.
Mr Justice David Steel told a High Court hearing this week that Mr Davison had “suffered undue pain, suffering and loss of amenity” as a result of being let down by the mental health team at Whittington Hospital.
He entered the hospital on January 2, 2004, and was assessed and kept on a ward. He later discharged himself, only to return six days later before walking out again on January 13.
Mr Davison was known to have suicidal thoughts and his lawyers claimed he should have been more strictly monitored.
Peter Jones, chairman of Islington Borough Users Group (IBUG) Mental Health, said: “I am very pleased the High Court is taking this issue seriously. NHS trust and accident and emergency staff need to look at this and consider their own responsibilities.”
The Foundation Trust said in a statement it was pleased the settlement agreed had been approved by the court, bringing legal proceedings to a conclusion. |
