Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 26 June 2009

Another land grab?

• I HAVE just received a letter from Islington Council about the Sobell Centre. It indicates the Lib Dem-run council is still not listening to the people of Islington.
In all, 4,500 users of the Sobell agreed it should be refurbished, and yet the Lib Dems are still hellbent on demolishing it. The only meaningful public consultation was a meeting organised by the Labour Party in a church hall to consult residents on the future of the Sobell.
Lib Dems say “there will be further public consultation before any work begins”. I also notice that the Lib Dems are centralising planning meetings at the town hall, making it more difficult for local people to attend them.
This time there must be a fair and proper consultation on the Sobell at public meetings where a refurbishment option can be considered and where the views of residents and Sobell users are listened to.
Otherwise people may conclude that this is just another land grab by the Lib Dems to build luxury housing for people they think will vote for them.
