Society birthday bash!
CHILDREN sprung on bouncy castles, DJs blasted out tunes and competitors took part in a tombola in aid of an Islington charity for people with learning difficulties at a fun day at the weekend.
The Elfrida Society celebrated its 90th birthday in style on Islington Green on Saturday. Children decorated cloth bags and tombola winners walked away with prizes including a luxury cake and a football signed by Arsenal players.
The Elfrida Society was founded by Lillian Gregg and Elfrida Rathbone in 1919. It worked with people with learning difficulties, including children who were excluded from schools. Lillian died in a flu epidemic early last century, but Elfrida carried on her work until her death in the 1940s.
The charity now works with adults with learning difficulties, who it says are often discriminated against.
