Signs a turn-off for fined drivers
NO-entry signs at a Canonbury street are to be made more visible, after confusion over new rules led to many drivers being issued with fines.
Entry to Henshall Street from Balls Pond Road was barred after residents complained it was being used as a rat-run by drivers and motorcyclists rushing at dangerous speeds down the tiny back-street.
The change was introduced as part of a new 20mph zone which was backed by residents.
But drivers have complained that the no-entry signs are not visible enough, and are sometimes obscured by rush- hour buses waiting at the kerb.
Lib Dem councillors have argued that drivers fined for breaking the new rules were not necessarily to blame – and have won guarantees from the council that signs will be improved. They are pressing for fines to be cancelled.
New warning signs about the banned turn will now go up in Balls Pond Road.
Canonbury Lib Dem councillor Paula Belford said: “Thousands of cars have been illegally turning into this road even though the rules changed months ago. In my opinion the signs aren’t visible enough and don’t even look like normal no-entry signs, so it wasn’t always the driver’s fault.
“I don’t think the fines should stand until the signs are made clearer and more noticeable.
“People are right to be angry. But we’ve won promises from the council’s traffic officers that this is going to be fixed.” |
