Carers ‘unseen and unsung heroes’
THE reality of life as a carer looking after an 83-year-old mother and a teenage autistic daughter at the same time was revealed this week.
Former care worker Minda Walsh told an Islington town hall event celebrating the borough’s 13,000 carers that her mother became “increasingly frail and confused” before her death last month. Ms Walsh said it was often difficult to balance the needs of her mother and her 15-year-old daughter Mary, who has severe learning difficulties.
Her previous experience working in an old people’s home helped her cope with the situation. “But nothing can prepare you for looking after your own loved ones, of different ages and with vastly different needs,” she said.
She praised the support she receives from Islington’s Bridge School, which Mary attends, and from Holloway’s Centre 404.
Mayor Anna Berent said carers like Minda were “the unseen and unsung heroes, offering a better quality of life to those they look after”.
She added: “Retaining their independence is something many older and disabled residents value highly. Carers truly are Islington’s secret service. We couldn’t do without them and we want to say a huge thank-you.” |
