Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 19 June 2009

Stub it out? But where?

• I WAS issued with a fixed penalty notice on June 2 for stubbing out a cigarette in public, which I immediately challenged without success. I am taking the issue further with Islington Council.
I managed to get photographic evidence showing that there is inadequate cigarette stubbing facilities in Archway, and that litter wardens were not carrying any form of visible ID or wearing high-visibility jackets or vests to state that they are on council business.
I was also cautioned by one of the wardens who, from what I have been told, has no right to caution any member of the general public.

• IT was stirring to hear the Communist Party of Great Britain (Marxist-Leninist) is leading the toiling masses forward against this wickedness of capitalism (Guilty of fag crime, but I won’t be paying my fine, June 12).
It is great news that we now have nothing to lose but our chains, sorry fag butts. However, having done a quick check through the works of our great leaders, Marx and Lenin, I could not find any reference to fag crime and its place in the revolutionary struggle.
This does need to be made clear, both to defend ourselves against the jackboots of the bosses’ stooge, Islington Council, and so we know which particular barricades to defend in the heroic fight against fag butt prejudice. Surely we must be told.
CHRIS BULFORD
College Cross, N1

• IN reference to the letter from David Leigh (June 12), I would like to make it clear that the comments made towards Islington Council are his personal views and not those held by Islington Mind.
Islington Mind publicly disassociates itself from this letter and apologises to the council for any offence caused.
Anne Thomas
Assistant director, Islington Mind
