Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 19 June 2009

Promises, promises

• I WAS pleased to see that London Mayor Boris Johnson has rowed back from breaking his promise to fund four rape crisis centres in London.
I criticised the Mayor in April for offering only half of what he had pledged before he got elected. His manifesto promised £744,000 a year (more than £2.2million over three years), but once in office he could find only £233,000.
Thankfully, he appears to have seen the error of his ways and has now announced £1.4million of funding over three years.
While I welcome this change of heart, let’s not forget that this is almost £1million less than Boris promised last year. A promise is a promise, and the Mayor should stick to those that got him elected.
Jennette Arnold
London Assembly Labour member for Hackney, Islington and Waltham Forest
