£4bn folly on the cards
• IN the middle of the economic crisis this Labour government is still committing itself to roll out its proposed ID card scheme. Its reasons for the scheme appear to be ever-changing, supported by vague claims that it will cut all things from benefit fraud to terrorism and make everyone somehow safer.
This scheme, underpinned by a massive database, would eventually index everyone in the UK, with up to 50 details (including name, address, fingerprints) held on each and every person. It is also a huge white elephant, costing the taxpayer more than £4billion over the next 10 years, on the government’s own calculations.
I would rather have this money spent on real police officers to cut real crime instead of an increased reliance on costly and insecure technology.
I am calling on Islington’s Labour MPs Jeremy Corbyn and Emily Thornberry to pin their colours to the mast and commit to opposing the continued roll-out of the ID card scheme.
