Backing Kip: Tenants leader’s support
A TENANTS’ leader has spoken out in support of beleaguered former caretaker Kip Gurney, who faces eviction from his home on the Holloway estate after 32 years.
Mr Gurney, 53, who won a bravery award after rescuing a resident from a fire in 1986, is being forced out of his flat after suffering a nervous breakdown which meant he couldn’t work for two years.
But Angela Slocombe, chairwoman of the estate’s tenants’ association and a long-time supporter and friend of Mr Gurney, believes that events on the estate and lack of support from the management contributed to his ill health.
She said: “We asked the local ombudsman to investigate the matter because we believe Kip has been very badly treated. But we were told the ombudsman can’t investigate personnel issues.”
Ms Slocombe, a lecturer at City and Islington College, collected a petition which was presented to the landlords, the Corporation of London, urging them not to evict Mr Gurney.
She added: “I’m upset that this could happen to someone like Kip who has given decades of service and not done anything wrong. But someone has decided that because he became ill he is of no use to the estate.
“I think the Corporation should do the decent and honourable thing. Give Kip and his wife Pauline what they want. Re-house them in Cheshunt where they can be with their family.” |
