Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 12 June 2009

Open up closed loos

• CONGRATS to Islington Council on its new pop-up loo, a much-needed facility in this increasingly loo-less society (Now you see it, now you don’t... loo solves a pressing problem, June 5).
I note that the council is promising new facilities in Archway. About time too, I hear you cry.
Might I suggest that the council makes use of the toilets that already exist right outside Archway Tavern.
These loos have been closed for many years and are now decorated outside (at some expense) with council plantings. It would be cheaper to renovate these old conveniences and install a coin- operated turnstile entrance.
Admission to the facilities could be, say, 20p. The money raised could then be used to help pay for a toilet attendant to keep the place clean and discourage vandalism and loitering.
Between the existing ladies and gents is space enough to build a new small facility for the disabled. I would welcome the council’s views on my suggestion.
