Arcade’s big payout gamble lost
COUNCILLORS in Holloway celebrated this week after plans to triple the number of high-payout machines at a gaming arcade were thrown out.
Islington Council had opposed a move by Agora, in the former Nag’s Head pub on the corner of Holloway Road and Seven Sisters Road, to split the current arcade into three so that there would be more slot machines with payouts as high as £500.
The council’s licensing committee originally refused to grant permission for the scheme and the decision was backed up on Tuesday after a court rejected Agora’s appeal.
Lib Dem councillor Tracy Ismail said: “Local people didn’t want this arcade split into three and we campaigned to make sure that it didn’t happen.”
School teachers and nearby traders and residents fought to stop the arcade opening in the first place, claiming that it would bring no benefit to the community. |
