Ball helps club hit charity goal

LEGENDARY rock giants The Who switched from pinball to football last week at Arsenal’s star-studded Legends and Youth charity ball.
The club raised more than £20,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust and Arsenal Charitable Trust at a celebrity auction of unique lots including the chance to take on Theo Walcott in a PlayStation tournament.
Little Britain’s Matt Lucas hosted the glittering evening, which was attended by Arsenal’s first team squad and manager Arsene Wenger.
The Who and up-and-coming singer VV Brown entertained, former cricketer Phil Tufnell and comedian Rory McGrath provoked laughs and veteran club DJ Judge Jules brought the beats. Auction lots included an exclusive dinner party for five friends hosted by Arsene Wenger in the Emirates Stadium’s Diamond Club which fetched £12,000 and a free-kick lesson from Arsenal Captain Cesc Fabregas. Mr Wenger said: “To hold such a fantastic event and break our previous fundraising record is truly wonderful.
“A big thank you must go out to the organisers and, of course to the generous guests who attended the ball.”
Roger Daltrey, patron of the Teenage Cancer Trust said: “Everyone at the charity has been overwhelmed by the support the club has shown us throughout the season. As an Arsenal fan I am proud of how the club and its fans from across the world have got behind us and this amazing fundraising total is testament to that.”
The event helped Arsenal smash its £300,000 fundraising target, the figure required to build an Education Zone within Teenage Cancer Trust’s unit in a brand new day care cancer centre due to open in 2012.
