Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 29 May 2009

A few home truths

• CONGRATULATIONS on your achievement in getting a report and a photograph of Anna Berent in the mayor’s robe in your recent edition ready for Friday morning’s reading (Chain of command, May 15).
However, I was shaken by the new leader of the council Councillor Terry Stacy’s claim that the Lib Dems had built the first council house in Islington for 25 years. What I remember of 25 years ago was the fight to save six sites earmarked for housing being sold by the Lib Dem predecessors, the SDP Alliance. The Labour leader Margaret Hodge and some outstanding council officers, including Eric Dear and colleagues, bid some £2million, twice the original figure.
Labour built several new estates, including one on St Paul’s Road and at Blair Close. There is a great need for decent homes, as Jeremy Corbyn maintains in his campaigns. Copies of my book, An Islington Councillor (1971-1992), which featured in this paper last week, are still available.
