At last: an MP with low expenses
HE has no second home and cycles to the House of Commons – Islington North MP Jeremy Corbyn’s expenses are among the lowest in Parliament.
He spent a total of £129,310 from the public purse in 2007/08 making him 539 out of 645 MPs.
Mr Corbyn claimed just £6,147 for communications but spent almost £94,000 employing three and a half members of staff as well as £1,826 for travel – including a diplomatic visit to the Turkish Parliament. He also visited the Congo twice last year to highlight civil strife in the country, staying with relief charity organisations.
Mr Corbyn voted in favour of details of MPs’ expenses being released under the Freedom of Information Act.
He said: “I’m very annoyed that some of my colleagues have clearly abused the system on housing costs for non-London MPs.
“But things are changing and there’s going to be a lot more openness and transparency.” |

Jeremy Corbyn has been (an MP) for over thirty years in Parliament. He waits until MPs' expenses are blown out in the open before expressing "outrage". Why did he not speak out before?
Call my cynical, but I do not believe that the changes will bring more openess and transparency, as long as Labour is in power.
