Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 22 May 2009

Builders of our nation

• INDOMITABLE and heroic Irish contractors like John Murphy who built so much of the UK infrastructure should be celebrated, and indeed studied, as models of an extraordinary entrepreneurial and pioneering culture (Builder off the Holyhead boat who rose to become Rich List millionaire, May 15).
So many wonderful stories should have been told about these men, but were not. Why? Racism? Denial? Shame? Ignorance? Maybe the family of John Murphy might look at funding academic and literary research and celebration of this wonderful heritage?
JOHN O 'BRIEN
Fasano, Italy
