Legacy of great ideas
• KATE Calvert, who chairs Better Archway Forum, questioned the achievements of the former Junction Road Residents’ and Traders’ Association, which is surprising (Red tape hinders efforts to make Archway better, May 8).
A democratic organisation was set up, representing the interest of residents and traders. A radio-link scheme was set up to improve security for shopkeepers, aided largely by our Labour councillors. Ged Beadmore, of Goodwoods, set up and ran an excellent community fireworks display, attended by hundreds. From memory this ran for two or three years.
Kathrine Phalp, from MAP, organised Archway’s Christmas lights and switching-on ceremony, which again was a huge success, and has been running for more than five years. We initiated the idea of a farmers’ market, which developed into Archway Market, organised by Stephanie Smith, who has put a great deal into improving Archway.
As an organisation we galvanised the community into taking action. I’m not clear why Ms Calvert sought to undermine the achievements of a few individuals, and I hope when we look back at the legacy of Better Archway Forum, there are as many great ideas brought to fruition for the benefit of the community.

• LAST week’s letter from Better Archway Forum stated that Islington Council employed 8,000 members of staff. In truth, the council employs 3,029 full-time staff and 426 temps (we’ve reduced the reliance on temps in the last year). Islington schools employ 3,050 personnel, including support staff.
As the largest employer in the borough, we are acutely aware of the need to spend budgets wisely, reduce bureaucracy and duplication and provide value for money, particularly in the current economic climate. So we manage our vacancies very tightly – all roles are authorised by the chief executive before we start recruitment.
