Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 15 May 2009

Festival countdown

• READERS may be interested to know that Holloway Arts Festival, now in its seventh year, is back with a packed 10-day programme featuring more than 40 events. The festival (June 25 to July 5) showcases an exciting mix of music, visual arts, literature, cinema, theatre, dance and comedy, with many events free.
Turner Prize-winning artist Rachel Whiteread, traditional Irish singer Nóirín Ní Riain, novelist Marina Lewycka, local author Charlie Higson, comedians Richard Herring and Dan Antopolski and singer Sheila Chandra are some of the guests appearing.
Producer of Oscar-winning documentary Man on Wire, Simon Chinn, will discuss his work. There’ll be the chance to learn how to make a film in a day. Playwright Diane Samuels will run a writing workshop and poet John Hegley, the festival’s new patron, is appearing.
The Big Day Out in Whittington Park (July 4) will feature a carnival based on the theme of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, with a specially devised accompaniment composed by children from Bridge School, in collaboration with Drake Music.
New this year is Archway Open House, during which artists will exhibit their work in churches, cafés and businesses. There’ll also be talks, tours of exhibitions and workshops. Another first is the incorporation of Islington Dance Festival events, bringing together outstanding dancers, including professional performers, and those with special needs and disabilities.
There’s still time to enter our Urban Shots photography competition, which has the theme of My Archway or My Holloway. The full programme is available at
