Rebel courted as leadership vote looms

REBEL Lib Dem councillor Andrew Cornwell is believed to be being courted by all sides in the run-up to next week’s Town Hall leadership election.
Cllr Cornwell, who recently announced he had returned to the Lib Dem fold after a public split last year, has subsequently voted against his party, destabilising the balance of power at the Town Hall, where Lib Dems have a majority of one.
It is understood Labour are in talks with Cllr Cornwell and will offer him a high-profile position in return for his vote on key issues. But Labour sources say they do not expect Cllr Cornwell to vote for their party leader, Councillor Catherine West, to take over as leader of the council when Councillor James Kempton steps down on Thursday. The Lib Dems are putting up Councillor Terry Stacy.
