Good woods! Pupil get a little closer to nature
NURSERY pupils have been getting down with nature on a series of visits to Islington’s largest area of woodland.
The youngsters from Laycock Nursery, in Angel, venture into Barnsbury Wood once a week as part of the Forest Schools Programme.
Laycock Nursery class teacher Kristina Gillett said: “The woods are a naturally rich resource which are constantly changing and provide endless fascination. The children’s senses are stimulated and the experience makes them think. Many of them are overawed and gain tremendous confidence as they become familiar with paths around the woods.”
Barnsbury Wood, which is managed by Islington Council’s Nature Conservation Team, is London’s smallest local nature reserve but also Islington’s largest piece of woodland. As well as being used by schools and other groups, the wood is open to the public every Tuesday afternoon between 2pm and 4pm.
There is a programme of events planned for the year, including an open day on Sunday May 31, a family event on Sunday July 5, and a play, The Three Musketeers, on Sunday July 19.
