‘Bailiffs turned up at 6.15am over bill I’d already paid’
A TUFNELL Park man is demanding an apology from Islington Council after a bailiff “hammered” at his door demanding money he had paid six months earlier.
Photographer Douglas Cape, 54, a leaseholder, was woken up at his flat in Hilldrop Crescent at 6.15am to find the official on his doorstep saying there was a warrant for his arrest.
The bailiff demanded that £325.62 in unpaid council tax or goods, including legal costs, would be confiscated within 24 hours.
“I was told that I had ignored all previous communications,” said Mr Cape, “and this was a final notice before they started to take away personal items from my home.”
Mr Cape waited several hours until he could contact the council’s revenue and benefit department who confirmed he had paid the sum last August.
Mr Cape added: “I was not in arrears and they had made a mistake. At the very least I think I deserved an explanation and an apology.
“I’d spent hours dealing with this issue including phone calls and letters to the council confirming conversations.”
The council say they have withdrawn financial claims and the warrant.
Mr Cape (pictured) believes the mistake was made because he paid his council tax bill over the internet.
He said he would advise others to always keep paper work and take names of officials. |
