Fine result for fuming engine protesters
MOTORISTS who refuse to turn off their engines when asked will face £20 spot fines under new plans approved last night (Thursday).
Councillors at the Town Hall’s executive meeting agreed to adopt powers under the Road Traffic Vehicle Emissions Regulations allowing a team of council officers to dish out fines to offenders.
The team of eight Public Protection Team council officers will target hot spots in the borough. If they find drivers unnecessarily running their engines they will ask them to switch off – and if they are ignored they will issue a Fixed Penalty Notice of £20, rising to £40 if unpaid after 28 days.
The move follows Tribune reports that residents of Camden Road and Highbury Corner were teaming up in a campaign against running bus engines. They complained the noise and vibrations were disruptive and that they were sick of the polluting fumes. |
