‘Friendly’ thieves made off with priceless jewellery

A MOTHER-of-three has spoken of her anger after two “friendly” thieves – posing as window cleaners – conned their way into her home and made off with thousands of pounds worth of jewellery.
The thieves struck on Friday afternoon, while the family’s babysitter was at home with the homeowner’s three-year-old daughter.
The victim, a 44-year-old housewife, who asked not to be named, had taken her two older children to the cinema.
“It was during the Easter holidays.” she said. “While we were out, two men knocked on the door and said they were booked to do a full inside and outside clean of the windows. The babysitter was a bit uneasy and said she wanted to call me.”
The thieves appeared friendly and said they would check upstairs to see if they should start upstairs or downstairs while she made the call.
The victim said: “He was down in 30 seconds. Then they were outside clashing mops and buckets around. The childminder called me and asked if I’d booked anyone but I said I’ve never booked window cleaners.”
When the victim returned home, she discovered the thieves had plundered her jewellery box and made off with more than £2,000 worth of her belongings.
She said the 25-year-old babysitter was “distraught”, adding: “They had all the gear with them and were very confident, almost friendly.”
Islington Police are appealing for witnesses and information on the burglary, which happened in Highbury just before 3pm.
The suspects are described as two men, one about 5ft 7in tall with light brown hair and wearing a blue jacket.
They both had London accents.
Anyone with information can contact police on 0207 421 0220 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
