Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 24 April 2009

Disguise with ID?

• COUNCILLOR Greg Foxsmith, a civil rights solicitor observing the G20 demonstration, says: “What disturbed me about the incident was that this officer was wearing a balaclava so his face could not be identified” (G20: On the frontline, April 17).
I think he will find that balaclava helmets worn by police are fireproof clothing, similar to that worn by Grand Prix racing drivers. A close look at the photograph of the four police officers taken by him shows all of them have blue and silver on one of their shoulders, indicating an identification number. Not much point in an officer “disguising” his face if he is wearing an identification number is there?
Cllr Foxsmith states that “one young Muslim girl was corralled for eight hours. She was in the wrong place at the wrong time”. Come off it, councillor! No one taking part in a demonstration is in the “wrong place at the wrong time”, especially after what has happened at past City demonstrations.
