Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 24 April 2009

True face of Nasty Party

• IN the last few weeks there have been letters in the Tribune from Labour politicians and supporters crowing about getting their budget through this year.
They have tried to make out that this is because the Lib Dems are “in chaos”. But as the councillor who was missing from the budget vote, I think it is only right your readers know the truth.
The real and only reason Labour got its council tax rise through this year was because I was rushed into hospital on the morning of the vote. I have since been diagnosed with bladder cancer and am having chemotherapy. Labour knew this on the night and was asked to delay the budget vote. But it preferred to play politics instead.
Labour is now putting out a survey in my ward, not from the local MP or its council group leader but from someone who will be its candidate if I get too ill to be a councillor any longer or die. This is the true face of Labour in Islington – the Nasty Party. I am disgusted at its actions.
I would like to thank all the kind people who have contacted me since and sent me cards or flowers wishing me well. At a time like this, their support means the world to me.
Cllr Donna Boffa
Lib Dem, Bunhill ward

• THIS morning I was handed a newspaper produced by Islington Conservatives which contains incorrect information about our council tax.
The Lib Dems wanted to freeze it; the Labour councillors wanted to increase it. As one Lib Dem councillor had been rushed to hospital on the day of the vote Labour was able to push through the increase. As a result, pensioners like myself are now buying lunch for Boris’s children. It’s madness, but don’t blame the Lib Dems for it.
