Mother-of-three reveals joys and challenges of role that took her back to the ‘raw you’
THE blogs of a Highbury mother-of-three – featured in a new book – reveal the highs and lows of bringing up children.
Charlotte Moerman has defended her decision to reveal intimate details of life with her sons, aged six, five and three.
She said: “It’s more of a celebration of the boys. I’m not exploring things I think will be hurtful. It’s a celebration not a whinge. I just hope I’ve done the people I love justice.”
Her blog, The Buggy Blogger, is remarkably honest. Entries describe the trials of trips to the loo with three young boys, and the insistent questions about why she doesn’t have a “willy”.
Ms Moerman cannot see anything startling about her openness. She said: “The most popular bits have been the wee and the private bits blogs.”
The book, Instructions not Included, maps her progress from the marketing department of British Airways to being a stay-at-home mother, from the strains of being pregnant to the heart-wrenching first day at school. Ms Moerman hopes blog and book will help support new mothers.
She said: “The expectation is that it’s all fluffy and lovely. You see all the celebs in the magazines back to a size eight and in their white jeans.”
But she admits loneliness and loss of identity can come with motherhood: “When you have a child, it’s back to the raw you. There’s no job title, no set of targets. You have to start all over again, while you’re exhausted.”
The weight of expectation on mothers can be vast. “You so desperately want to do the right thing,” she said.
But she is quick to emphasise the joy of being a mum. “Elements take your breath away: when you hold that little baby. The unmitigated love they show you is great,” she said.
