Woman becomes latest cyclist killed on roads

MP Emily Thornberry expressed “deep sadness” last night (Thursday) after the death of another cyclist beneath a lorry on the streets of Islington.

A woman in her 30s died following an accident with a white Mercedes cement mixer at the busy Old Street
crossing with Goswell Road in Clerkenwell, yesterday morning.
Ms Thornberry, a regular cyclist, who represents Islington South and Finsbury, has been campaigning for heavy lorries to provide wing mirrors so that drivers can see their blind spots.
She said: “There’s been at least four deaths of cyclists on the roads of the borough in the past two years. Cyclists are always very vulnerable.”
Newsagent Navin Bhuptani, whose shop Goswell News is close the accident scene, said: “This is a very dangerous crossing.”
A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and was last night in custody.
Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 020 7321 9960.
