Ripped out: Store protest
A SUPERMARKET has been accused of “destroying” a historic shop front in an Archway conservation area.
Work on a new Iceland store in the former Woolworths building in Junction Road has brought claims that sash windows and the marble main entrance have been damaged. The shop is within the St John’s Grove Conservation Area.
Jan Tucker, who works in Junction Road, said she had seen workers breaking up marble and digging up tiles. “I was devastated when I saw what they had done,” she added. “They took the curved glass windows completely out. I almost started crying.”
Lib Dem mayor Stefan Kasprzyk said: “It’s deeply concerning that they’re just ripping things out. We don’t want unsympathetic development.”
Islington Council has asked Iceland to stop work because vital details were missing from its building plans.
A spokesman for Iceland Supermarket said: “Clearly, we will do everything we can to work with the council on this issue, but we are keen to open the shop as quickly as possible.”
