Swallowing up rights
• ISLINGTON Council is consulting residents around Emirates Stadium about plans to turn the surrounding streets into a controlled drinking zone (CDZ), which would give police extra powers to stop people, confiscate drinks, issue on-the-spot fines and arrest anyone who fails to comply.
I’m concerned that the police are becoming a law unto themselves, with councils handing over our rights. There are now more than 800 controlled drinking zones in the UK and hundreds of people have been fined and arrested for refusing to hand over their drink. Those who have ended up in court are found guilty of defying a police officer. When police have the power to decide who is guilty without the right to appeal, what civil liberties are left?
