Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 3 April 2009

Opponents of rebate

I HAVE just received my copy of Islington Now for April. In the Leader’s Column, Councillor James Kempton states: “February’s council meeting and the budget-setting saw money earmarked for key areas, including £9million to boost our parks and open spaces, £11million to improve our roads and pavements and a £100 council tax rebate for pensioners.”
Cllr Kempton omits to mention that he and the Liberal Democrats opposed the council rebate for pensioners. In their somewhat alarmist recent propaganda on council tax it is one of the proposals they condemn as Labour’s “pet projects”.
So there can be no misunderstanding, let’s make it absolutely clear: the Lib Dems were opposed to and voted against giving the £100 council tax rebate to the pensioners of Islington.

• I AM astonished that, after all the self-congratulations about their helping hand to pensioners, the Lib Dems, in a tiny corner of page 10 of their latest glossy, inform pensioners that if they wish to apply by phone, after answering a few questions, their claim for the £100 rebate on their council tax will be processed.
The council must be well aware of the millions of pounds worth of benefit not being claimed nationally because people are not always aware of their rights. Perhaps it is hoping the same will happen with this entitlement. This £100 should have been automatically deducted from the bill of every pensioner paying council tax.
In case any pensioner missed this tucked-away item, the number to ring is 020 7257 2633 (not even a free number). We hope every pensioner entitled to this rebate will make a claim.
