Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 3 April 2009

Set aside talk of targets, we must build family homes

OVERCROWDING in social housing is a huge problem in our borough, and we need more affordable family homes (End rabbit hutch life, March 27).
This is something the Liberal Democrats in Islington are tackling by building the first new council homes in a generation – some of which are about to be completed in my ward. I’m really glad that these will include large homes fit for families.
In the current economy, private companies aren’t building as many houses in London, so it’s good that nine years of sound financial management by the Liberal Democrats in Islington have put the council in the position to step in and build new affordable homes for families.
Labour politicians always talk about affordable housing, but in practice they have been more concerned with bureaucratic quibbling over government targets and squeezing in as many rabbit hutch-sized units at the expense of bigger homes.
To me, Labour seems more concerned about raw numbers and government targets than about the reality of life for overcrowded tenants. Yes, there is a long housing waiting list, but the urgent need is for family homes.
Cllr RHODRI JAMIESON - BALL
Lib Dem, Mildmay
