Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 27 March 2009

Olympics road dash

• YOUR article about crossing times at the junction of Upper Street and Islington Park Street highlighted real concerns about roads managed by the Mayor’s Transport for London (On your marks… for the crossing countdown dash, March 20).
Sadly, this is not the only location where there is a problem. Last week, Liberal Democrats were out protesting by the Highbury Corner post office, where there are just a few seconds to cross.
How the elderly, disabled and parents with their children are supposed to get across in the time given is anyone’s guess. What happens if they get stuck in the middle?
This must be one of the busiest crossings in the borough.
Liberal Democrats have been running a campaign for months along Upper Street and Holloway Road calling on Mayor of London Boris Johnson to increase crossing times. But as if the current situation isn’t bad enough, Boris now wants to cut crossing times even more so the traffic can go faster!
I know that Boris wants the 2012 London Olympics to be a success but expecting us all to be Olympic sprinters to get across Holloway Road and Upper Street is ridiculous.
Do sign our petition at highburyeast.org.uk – it makes a real difference.
