Is ice cream van at park the way to beat obesity?
• WITHOUT wishing to sound a killjoy, can we please ask the council why it is appropriate to allow an ice cream van to be permanently stationed on the path outside Highbury Fields playground, all day long from spring to autumn?
This is something that has long been a source of frustration and upset.
My kids go to the playground and park most days in the summer – that’s what it’s for. I don’t mind them having an ice cream every now and then but I do really resent having to say No every day or even twice a day – it’s enough to make you not want to go to the park at all.
How can the council justify allowing this van to park there (on the walkway) in such a prime, unavoidable position at the entry to the park?
I know parents ‘can just say No’, and I do – all the time. But why should parents and carers be put in the position of having the argument and upset, day in, day out?
Whatever kickback the council gets from licensing is presumably then allocated to its Anti-Obesity Fund – the logic is a nonsense. The council should be encouraging healthy living and not actively promoting this private enterprise.
At the very least, can’t the van be asked to park on the side road opposite, not literally at the playground gate on the path to the swimming pool?
